Core Values
Values are broad, core beliefs about what is good, what we aspire to, and strive to protect. The values of the healthcare interpreting profession are present at all times. They guide healthcare interpreters when they are deciding which behaviors and actions will best support the healthcare goals of the parties in the encounter.
The profession's values help interpreters stay true to their main purpose/function, which is to make communication possible between two parties who do not speak the same language or share the same cultural context, in support of equitable healthcare across languages and cultures.
Occasionally, conflicts between two values arise, creating ethical dilemmas. In such cases, the values in conflict need to be examined against the best outcome that could be hoped for in the specific situation.
The Four Core Values
Beneficence
Do good and promote well-being. The positive obligation to do good and promote the well-being of others.
Non-maleficence
Prevent harm, do not harm. The negative obligation to avoid causing harm or making choices that would negatively affect others.
Autonomy
Respect self-determination and freedom. The right to self-determination and the freedom to act according to your own values and interests.
Fidelity
Commitment to duties and faithfulness. The unfailing fulfillment of one's duties and obligations and the keeping of one's word or vows.
